‘The Northern Irish Flag – The Red Hand of Ulster’

In this instalment I look at the flag of Northern Ireland, even if it is unofficial, and still causes controversy inside the country today.

Despite its seeming loyalist connotations, the flag has a history that is at the same time as Gaelic as it is British and like Northern Ireland is a result of the mixture of both. Covering as diverse topics as the Ui Neill’s mysterious Red Hand of Ulster, the Tyrone Rebellion and Nine Years War of 1594 – 1603, the Anglo-Scottish Plantation of Ulster, The 1916 Easter Rising and the Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1970’s.
