Terreuraanslag op moskeeën in Nieuw-Zeeland

Nieuw-Zeeland is getroffen door een terroristische aanslag op twee moskeeën in de stad Christchurch. Voor zover bekend zijn er meer dan tientallen mensen om het leven gekomen en zijn er tientallen mensen gewond geraakt. De eerste aanslag vond plaats op de Al Noor-moskee, waarbij de meeste doden vielen. De tweede aanslag vond plaats op een moskee in de buitenwijk Linwood. Het dreigingsniveau in Nieuw-Zeeland is opgeschroefd van laag naar hoog.

New Zealand mosque attack suspect Brenton Tarrant appeared before the court briefly. Australian-born 28-year-old Tarrant stood in the dock wearing handcuffs. Tarrant is charged in relation to the Christchurch massacre that killed at least 49 people in two mosques. Tarrant is scheduled to appear before the court on 5 April 2019.

Christchurch shootings: Suspect Brenton Tarrant appears in court

The main suspect in the mosque shootings that killed 49 people in New Zealand on Friday has appeared in court on a single murder charge.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28, appeared in the dock in a white prison shirt and handcuffs. Further charges are expected to be made against him.

PM Jacinda Ardern said Mr Tarrant had five guns and a firearms licence, adding: “Our gun laws will change.”

Two others are in custody. None of those detained had a criminal record.
