No Brexit compromise in sight between Boris Johnson and EU leaders

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is heading to Paris to continue talks on Brexit.

Johnson is calling for the Brexit deal to be re-negotiated. He says the provision for the Irish border – known as the backstop – has to go.

It’s a demand the French president rejects. But at a meeting in Berlin on Wednesday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she thought Britain could still leave the EU with a deal.

Both Merkel and Johnson seemed optimistic that a solution could be found, though none yet has emerged. If no side moves, the UK may head for a no-deal Brexit at the end of October.
